NYSDEC Boat Launch Closure for Construction Improvements at South End of Port Bay

March 23, 2021 – Fishing in Wayne County is important to many of the residents in Wayne County for food, recreation and natural fellowship. While approaching the opening of fishing season on April 1, 2021, make sure to survey your regular locations for access, water levels and water quality before heading out to fish.

NYSDEC is moving forward with long overdue maintenance on several of their properties. The NYSDEC Fishing Access site: South End of Port Bay will be closed to the public beginning March 23, 2021. This project was scheduled to be completed last year but due to impacts from COVID19 the project was postponed.

In speaking with NYSDEC Division of Fisheries and Division of Operations personnel this week, many improvements are being made to the site which will make the site useful and resilient in the future. The site will be closed for approximately 2 months. Some of the improvements include: Access road improvements to reduce flooding, an informational kiosk system, improvements to the current failing break walls, expansion of the boat launch width to allow more boats in and out and a floating dock system.

These improvements will provide better opportunities for access and fishing in the future. For now, please plan accordingly. NYSDEC Fishing Access Site: North End at Port Bay is available for localized access. This site is also up for improvements later this year.
